Jacksonville, Fla. Bowling Green State University freshman Makenzie Wheat entered Saturday's NCAA East Regional Preliminary round with nothing to lose. As the final qualifier in the 48-person shot put field, Wheat's odds of placing in the top 12 and advancing to the NCAA National Championships were slim. But the opportunity to experience NCAA Regional competition as a freshman was an important piece of her development process.
